Projects
Things I have built, and keep building.
Flatten SF
The flattest route between any two points in San Francisco. Pick a start and an end, then slide from the shortest route to the flattest one; every route on the slider is one that nothing else beats on both distance and climbing. Routing runs in your browser across 160,000 street segments, with elevation from USGS 1-meter lidar.
The analysis behind it maps the city's hidden network of flat streets. The Wiggle falls out of the algorithm on its own, and a handful of passes over Golden Gate Park and around Twin Peaks decide most east–west trips.
PiJAMA
Piano Jazz with Automatic MIDI Annotations: 200+ hours of solo jazz piano, automatically transcribed to MIDI from thousands of recordings. The accompanying paper measures how reliable the transcriptions are and what the data reveal about the pianists. It is the training data for the jazz pianist style work.
piano-capture
Synchronized MIDI playback and audio capture. Point it at a folder of MIDI files and a player piano such as a Yamaha Disklavier, and it performs each file while recording the audio, producing aligned audio–MIDI pairs for transcription research. It made the studio re-recordings of MAESTRO behind our robust piano transcription paper.
Other labs use it too. Gerhard Widmer's group at JKU Linz recorded their Musical Distribution Shift corpus with it for Sound and music biases in deep music transcription models (Marták, Hu, and Widmer, EURASIP Journal on Audio, Speech, and Music Processing, 2025).
